Territory

The defined geographic area (typically specified by zip codes or county boundaries) within which a franchisee has the right to operate and market under the franchise brand. Territory protection is a core component of the franchise agreement.

Also known as: territory · franchise territory · service territory · market area · protected territory

A franchise territory defines the geographic boundaries within which a franchisee may operate and, in most cases, where the franchisor agrees not to grant another franchisee. Territories are typically defined by zip codes, counties, or population thresholds. Territory size and demographics significantly affect franchisee revenue potential: market density, senior population concentration, and competition all influence the addressable market within a territory. Disputes can arise over territory definition, franchisee underperformance (which may allow the franchisor to assign clients outside the territory), and digital marketing that crosses boundaries.
