Open Shift
A scheduled shift that does not yet have a confirmed caregiver assignment. Open shifts represent both a scheduling risk (potential revenue loss) and an urgent operational task for the scheduler.

An open shift is a slot on the schedule where a client needs coverage but no caregiver has been confirmed. Open shifts arise from call-offs, no-shows, new client starts where staffing hasn't been secured, or caregiver turnover.
The scheduler's primary job is to minimize open shifts through proactive assignment and rapid backfill when they arise. Open shift rate (percentage of scheduled shifts that go unfilled) is a key operational KPI.
High open shift rates are a leading indicator of caregiver supply issues or scheduling process problems.
